Rebel Moon: Part One- Child of Fire

This we are discussing the latest movie from Zack Snyder, Rebel Moon. We are aware that the title is longer than that, but really who has that kind of time. Is it possible that this was secretly part of a documentary where Snyder pitches the plot of a well loved movie to Netflix just to see what would happen? We really hope so, that would at least be entertaining to watch.

The Marvels

Today is Sean’s birthday! To celebrate, here is our episode on The Marvels. This was the lowest opening movie in the MCU, yet most people seem to agree that it was actually pretty good. Are we “most people”? Well I guess you’ll have to listen to find out. And If you haven’t yet, wish Sean a happy 42!

Enjoy!

Theater Etiquette (replay)

Sorry about no new episode this week, but instead here is something that we feel is still very important. It seems as though people’s behavior in theaters is getting worse and worse, and so here is our episode from years ago all about “theater etiquette”.

Enjoy!

The Frighteners

This week we are discussing the horror/comedy from 1996, The Frighteners. Though there is enough from that movie to fill an episode, we also talk about a lot of the other movies we’ve been watching lately. And like most things we watch, some of them are good, and some a really really bad.

Enjoy!

Asteroid City

This week we are discussing the latest film from Wes Anderson, Asteroid City. As is the case with most of Anderson’s films, if you like his style, you will probably like this one, and if you don’t, you won’t. We happen to like what he does, but we know that he isn’t for everyone. That said, please feel free to listen to find out where this particular film compares to his other work.

Enjoy!

Sherlock Jr.

This week we are reviewing our first silent film on COtR, Sherlock Jr. When this film was requested there may have been a little bit of trepidation because a nearly 100 year old film isn’t really in our wheelhouse, but when we saw that beautiful 45 min runtime, we were all in. There may have been varying degrees of enjoyment from the group, but each of us were still entertained. Turns out, Buster Keaton, pretty good a what he does.

OscarBowl 2023

Every year Roy and Kira spend all of Super Bowl Sunday marathoning several Oscar nominated films. The line up this year was The Banshees of Inisherin, The Triangle of Sadness, Empire of Light, and Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio. Lots of highs and lows, and some very unwelcome themes for the day, but maybe more enjoyable that watching a football game.

Enjoy!

Oscar (1991)

We are back with another episode we recorded as part of our “Cabin Chronicles”. This time are we went with the 1991 comedy, Oscar. It had been a long time since any of us had seen this one, and there may have been a little trepidation from some in the crowd. Roy seemed confident that this was still a movie that was still worth watching when he chose it, but we all know that he is the most optimist movie watcher out there. So sit back and listen as we break down our thoughts on this oft requested film.

The 300th Episode

Each time we make it to another century mark I am surprised that we are still doing this. I know that it isn’t always easy to make time to watch all of these movies and then find even more time to record these episodes, but I am glad that everyone has been up to the challenge, and these last hundred have certainly thrown many challenges our way. The bulk of the last hundred have been recorded remotely, with only a single episode taking place where we were all physically together. For me personally, having this show to look forward to each week provided a great deal of comfort during the anxiety ridden days of 2020/2021, and for that I will always be grateful.

If you managed to stick around as we worked through all the technical ins and outs of doing this show remotely, and suffered through us talking about Space Camp and 3 Ninjas while new movies were constantly being shelved, then we all thank you very much.

Now to start the next hundred…

Enjoy!

The Shawshank Redemption

Today is Sean’s 40th birthday, and to celebrate we took a little trip and all got together for the first time in a couple of years. We watched a lot of movies, we recorded a lot of episodes, but we wanted something special for his actual birthday, so we gave Sean the option of recording about anything he wanted, and he chose his all time favorite, The Shawshank Redemption.

Watching movies is great, but sharing this experience with the other guys on the show has been an absolute pleasure.

Enjoy!

Tales From the Hood

We just can’t quit talking about horror movies, though this one surprised us. We all seemed to remember what this movie was about, but it definitely hit harder for us this time around. I know the movie didn’t change, but we certainly have since this movie was released in the 90’s. Plenty to talk about before we take a break from horror for a minute. Before you know it we will be gearing for another Hallmark Christmas episode. Enjoy!

The Night House

Yeah, we know that October is over, and most podcasts are probably moving onto those very well know Thanksgiving movies, but we watched a lot of horror last month, and that means you get more horror episodes, and run on sentences. The Night House is the movie that brought Ryan back to the theaters after being closed for so long. Did it do justice to such a notable honor? Just listen and find out.

Enjoy!

Don't Breathe/Don't Breathe 2

Here is a nice double feature to keep our October movies going. Maybe they aren’t technically “horror”, but there are still plenty of jumps and scares, so we are adding it to the list. There are a lot of weird choices they make in this series, and we like some and hate others, as characters and their motivations seem to change a lot . We hope everyone has a great Halloween, and that you are watching only the best scary movies to stay in the mood.

Enjoy!

Fear Street Trilogy

I am not sure I will ever understand why Netflix decided to release the Fear Street trilogy in the middle of the summer instead of in October, but I am sure some algorithm told them it would be more successful that way. Whatever the reason, we decided to wait until the spookiest month before we released our episode on the three movies. If you’ve ever listened to this show before, you may know that Roy is very particular about the naming of sequels, and we barely get through the opening before he makes his feelings known. Guess you’ll have to listen to the rest to find out how we felt about the actual movies.

Enjoy!

Candyman (2021)

As October finally rolls in, what better way to begin this spooky month, than with a conversation about the truly terrifying film, Candyman. We tried our best to now get scared, but we were not up to the task. This is collectively one of our favorite times of year to talk about movie, so if there’s a horror film that you want recognized, please let us know.

Movie Night: Halloween 2

Roy decided to kick off our month of horror movies a little early by selecting Halloween 2 as his movie night choice. Can this immediate followup to the original capture the same magic? Absolutely not. Is it at least a serviceable horror movie? The answer to that question is the crux of this episode, but our opinions definitely vary. Regardless of what we thought, it dis kind of make us want to revisit this franchise.

Jolt

There are so many new films being released on various streaming services that is can be a little overwhelming. Movies seem to be released and almost immediately forgotten about. Maybe the marketing is bad, maybe there are just too many fish in the sea and people are drowning in content. Or in the case of Jolt, the Amazon original film, the movie is just so generic, and the production value feels so low, that our collective consciousness immediately rejects it. I guess it will always be a mystery. Anyway, here is our episode on Jolt. Maybe you’ll like it more than we did.

Movie Night: Freaks

This week we decided to celebrate Ryan’s upcoming wedding by letting him choose the movie for movie night. At first he mentioned possibly choosing a romantic comedy as a way to pay tribute to his upcoming nuptials, but finally settled on the sci-fi thriller, Freaks, because nothing says “true love” like any of Ryan’s movie picks.

If you haven’t seen this movie yet, it is available on Netflix. So fire it up, then come back and listen to this very very very romantic episode of Coming Off the Reels.

Enjoy!

Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins

The title of this movie is a little bit deceiving if you are looking for G.I. Joes in your G.I. Joe movie. Other than that, I guess you will just have to listen to the episode if you want to know what everyone thought. We even brought in a guest, Matt McCabe, just so we could give you even more opinions about this inauspiciously released film. Don’t worry, there are many differing thoughts, so I am sure you’ll be able to agree with one of us.

The Suicide Squad

Right out of the gate, The Suicide Squad is so much better than Suicide Squad. That isn’t any kind of major accomplishment, but now you don’t have to wonder how the two compared. How much better is certainly up for debate in this week’s episode. So if you’ve watched the entry from DC, or if you have no interest, but still want to hear our thoughts, then this is the episode for you.
