Baby Driver

We were able to attend an advance screening of the new Edgar Wright film, Baby Driver. Normally we don't like to give away too much about what we thought of a movie in the blurb, in case someone accidentally listens to the show, but for this movie, we are making an exception. There are a lot of movies out in the theaters this summer, and this one could easily be missed amidst the never-ending parade of billion dollar franchises and ill-advised reboots. Baby Driver manages to be effortlessly cool and fun in a time when movies seem to be in short supply of both. If you've ever complained about the lack of options at the movies, it is your responsibility to see Baby Driver, so that movies like it can continue to be made.

Enjoy!

Aftershock/John Dies at the End

Aftershock
Aftershock

Tired of how we are always talking about movies that people have heard of? Well this episode is just for you. How unknown are these movies? Ryan and I saw Aftershock on opening weekend, and during that weekend it made $40,000 total. Just how little is that for a movie to make? Well that same weekend, Silver Linings Playbook, having been released six months before, and and having already been released on blu ray and dvd two weeks before, still managed to make three times as much as Aftershock that weekend. We work tirelessly to find you the real hidden gems. You're welcome. John Dies at the End...well...what can I say about a movie like this? It really just needs to be experienced. I just don't have the words right now, and yet somehow we thought it would make a perfect movie to talk about while we drink and record it for all of you. I'm sorry.

Lockout and The Dark Knight Rises

Could The Dark Knight Rises really ever be the movie that everyone wanted it to be? All Nolan would have to do would be to make not only the greatest comic book movie of all time, but maybe one of the best movies in general. Well I hate to spoil things for you, but TDKR did not outdo it's predecessor, or perhaps it is even the worst of the bunch...at least to one of us. Then we thought it was a good idea to watch Lockout. I have never shared the same dislike for the French that many Americans seem to have, but if this is the kind of films they are going to make, I may jump on the wagon. To be fair, I also blame Patrick Morris, who told me it was soooo good! Patty also suggested I watch  Running Scared, which I also talk about in this show.

Damn you Pat!!!

Or instead of ever watching Lockout, watch this trailer instead. We both think it looks pretty awesome.

The Avengers and Dead Heat

Avengers
Avengers

Of course everyone in the world will be watching The Avengers, so our opinion is just a drop in the sea of comments about Joss Whedon's crazy successful film. Rather, enjoy learning about the Treat Williams/Joe Piscopo horror/comedy/action/buddy cop film, Dead Heat. Few movies are as bonkers as this one. Remember that time you dropped a few tabs of acid and thought you were being attack by lunch meat? All of that basically happens in Dead Heat, and I dare say that isn't even the weirdest part of the movie. It was the perfect movie to pair with one of the biggest movies of the year. Which of the two movies were better? I guess you'll just have to listen to the show. ...The Avengers was better.

21 Jump Street and The Hunger Games

Believe it or  not, we originally planned on watching Wrath of the Titans. It appears as though some higher power is looking out for us, because we watched The Hunger Games instead. I can't say for certain that Wrath of the Titans was going to be a bad film, but the first Titans films was one of the worst movies Ryan and I have watched together. I know that we should be watching more bad films, but until theaters start letting us walk in for free, you are going to have to listen to reviews of movies were are actually interested in watching. I wouldn't hold you breath for a review of The Three Stooges...you might get one for The Raven.

Chronicle

I kept expecting a talking lion and some Christian allegory, but perhaps I was thinking of a different Chronicle. Has the "found footage" genre finally jumped the shark? Can a low budget superhero movie possibly hope to succeed in a world with $250,000,000 behemoths like John Carter out there? Can the snap of a Slim Jim be picked up on on our microphones during the show? These answers and more in the new episode.

Sherlock Holmes and The Muppets

This should have been up sooner, but you know how it is this time of year. Every free minute has to be spent catching up on nominated Oscar films. Plus if you think these shows are already too long, you should hear them before I edit out that random chatter and beer breaks. Just wait until we do the best/worst of 2011 episode...it might be 5 hours long. I will probably spend at least 2 hours talking about how much I hated Bridesmaids. For now, you will just have to enjoy this show.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows-Part 2

After 10 years and 8 movies, the Harry Potter Saga has finally come to a close. Was the last installment everything we hoped it would be? Were the different arcs resolved as well as they were in the books? What parts of the movie made us cry? Why did Morgan sign on to be in Dolphin Tale? Come on Morgan! You were in The Shawshank Redemption! Now you are giving tailless dolphins prosthetic tails? And...Harry Connick Jr. is in it, and being in a movie with him has never helped anyone's career. Did you lose a bet? Yes, there are a great many questions that are posed in this weeks show. I can't promise that we will answer them all, but we certainly had fun making fun of Dolphin Tale.

Also joining us this week were Courtney Felix and Tyler Johnson.

Super 8 - Troll 2 - Best Worst Movie

There is a little something for everyone in this episode. We review a good movie, a bad movie, and a good movie about a bad movie. If only we could find a bad movie about a good movie...like a 6 hour finger puppet retelling of Citizen Kane... and all of the dialogue is written in haiku form...and the camera is always  just slightly out of focus...and it stars Hillary Swank. Gives me chills just thinking about Hillary Swank continuing to star in movies. This episode does run a little long, almost an hour I believe, but when you are talking about Super 8 and Troll 2 it is impossible to be brief. Enjoy the show and please watch the amazing PSA from the Alamo Drafthouse. http://youtu.be/1L3eeC2lJZs

X-Men: First Class

It has been a while since we recorded a show. We desperately wanted to watch Mr. Popper's Penguins, but sadly it hadn't been released yet. We decided to fill the penguin shaped holes in our hearts with the newest X-Men movie. Now the 3rd X-Men film was not very good, and the Wolverine movie was considerably more unwatchable than the worst episode of American Idol. How would the new one stack up? I guess you will just have to listen to the show. We also talk about several other summer movies that I am sure will end up being worse than Mr. Popper's Penguins.

Hobo with a Shotgun and Thor

Thor
Thor

It is kind of hard to miss the media blitz for the latest Marvel film Thor, but just as entertaining, and maybe even more so, is the grindhouse inspired movie Hobo with a Shotgun. Both movies promise action packed sequences against the forces of evil, but only one of them has a hobo...with a shotgun. If hearing about these two films isn't enough for you, there is also a quick review of the new Fast 5, and an original theme song for...you guessed it...Hobo with a Shotgun. http://youtu.be/ssHEAOrAdCU

True Grit and The Social Network

True Grit
True Grit

On the surface, this week's show appears to be one of the most intelligent yet. Ryan and I watched Oscar contending films True Grit and The Social Network. We also talk about number of other films that we have watched over the last week or so. We watched films from France, Belgium, Australia, and Sweden. We play it straight almost the whole time, then the "Beer Fairy" makes a visit. I think it adds to the show.

Tron Legacy/Centurion

tron

Two films with a strangely similar stories to tell. Sure, one takes place in ye oldy times, while one exits inside a computer, but watch them both and you will see that it is true. Ryan watches a classic for the first time, I'll give you a hint...it isn't Garbage Pale Kids: The Movie...maybe next time. Also, how many trailers is the right amount before a movie? I can't be sure, but I think there were 83 trailers before Tron Legacy, and half of those were movies where Martin Lawrence was wearing a fat-suit. I may have to stop going to that theater. Anyway...enjoy the show.

Black Swan

If you are like me, then I am sure that you are tired of all the movies that make up the "crazy ballerina" genre. In spite of that, we still decided to watch Black Swan. I will warn you now, Ryan and I do end up talking about this movie far more extensively than other movies. If you are wanting to see this movie, you might not want to listen to this show just yet. I don't think we really spoil anything, but we come awfully close to discussing the whole movie. Enjoy.

Harry Potter/Unstoppable

We really do our best to live up to our name today. This show is all over the map. We do talk about Harry Potter, with the help of our guest, Tony Adkins. We also talk about Unstoppable, with the help of some Miller High Life. There are quite a few tangents in this one, and some stuff that had to be cut to make it appropriate for the kiddies. Maybe one day they will be on "Coming Off the Reels: After Dark".

Shutter Island and THEM

We sit down and watch the Martin Scorsese film Shutter Island which is about Zzz...Zzz...Zzz...uh...oh sorry about that. Good director, good actors, good source material...how could it not be great? No really, how could this movie turn out the way it did? We also watched the French horror film Them, proof that America does not have a monopoly on crappy horror movies.
