Fantasy Island

This week we talk about the Blumhouse horror film, Fantasy Island. This quickly becomes a debate about whether this movie is bad, good bad, or just good. If you’ve listened to the show, you can probably guess who comes down where. We also briefly discuss The Rhythm Section and other movies and shows we’ve been watching while stuck in our homes. I hope everyone is staying safe out there.

Enjoy!

The Hunt

Look, I know that everything is kind of awful right now, and it is pretty much impossible to look anywhere without seeing something that breaks out heart. I don’t really have a solution to those problems, but maybe listening to nerds talk about a movie that you maybe haven’t seen is just the kind of distraction you need from the constant barrage of awful that we all seem to be taking. This week we talk about The Hunt and some of the movies we’ve been watching together online as we all try our best to stay away from pretty much everything. I hope everyone is staying safe, and if you have any movies you’d like us to do an episode on, please just let us know.

Enjoy!

Sorry to Bother You & Blackkklansman

This is an episode that we recorded a couple of months ago, which was already several months after the movies were released in the theater. Now Sorry to Bother You and Blackkklansman are available to stream, so you have no excuses to have not see both of them. I don’t want to say that you might hear about these movies in our “Best of 2018” episode, but you are probably going to hear about these movies in our “Best of 2018” episode.

Sports!

With lots of folks traveling this holiday season, we thought that maybe you’d like an extra long episode of Coming Off the Reels. So we brought on a couple of special guests to talk about some of our favorite sports movies, and some that are pretty awful. After more than 90 minutes of recording, I think we realized that we may have to record several more episodes on the subject, but this is a start.

Enjoy!

Random Questions

This started out as a bonus episode, but went long enough that we decided to put it into the regular rotation. We asked for random suggestions on Twitter, and had a lot of fun discussing them. From tattoos, to the demise of Filmstruck, to annoying habits in movies, we were all over the map on this one. Special thanks to everyone who gave us these ideas!

Netflix Romantic Comedies

This week we take a look at several of the new Netflix romantic comedies. We did an episode many months ago where we asked what happened to this disappearing category of movies, and apparently we just needed to be patient to find out the answer. While we are thrilled that this genre is still relevant, the results are…a little bit mixed. I would like to go ahead and apologize for how poorly we explain some of these plots, some nights you just can’t find the thread to save your life. So sit back and relax as we fumble our way through Set It Up, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, and Sierra Burgess is a Loser.

Two Cities Special - Best of New York & Chicago

This was another show that we recorded at Two Cities Pizza Company. In honor of one of our favorite places to dine, we dedicated the theme of this episode to them by choosing our favorite movies set in these two amazing cities. I know that there are plenty of movies that we don’t mention (sorry Escape from New York), so please feel free to share your favorite movies set in the Big Apple or the Windy City.

Won't You Be My Neighbor & Three Identical Strangers

You know folks, we don't just watch crappy action movies where The Rock faces off against a giant building. Sometimes truth is more compelling and certainly stranger than anything we can make up. This week we discuss two recent documentaries,  Won't You Be My Neighbor, the story of Fred Rogers, and Three Identical Strangers, the tale of triplets who were separated at birth and then found each other later in life. With plenty of laughter, tears and suspense in these two films, there's something for everyone.

Eighth Grade

We are aware that men in their 30s would not relate to the film Eight Grade as much as other people (though everyone should go see this movie), so we brought it one of the smartest people we know, Kaitlin Conner, to give us her opinion of this new film from Bo Burnham. I want to apologize again for speaking over her at the beginning and end, I promise I was just trying to give her a grand introduction.

Gangster Movies

This is definitely one of the genres where we are at a loss. However, someone requested this episode, so we did our best to try and watch some of the more notable films from this particular category. Was it worth the hours and hours and hours of of voiceovers that we had to endure just to make this episode? That is up to you. I will say, it did give us a chance to introduce Roy to the Michael Bolton/Lonely Islands song, so maybe it was worth it.

Where are the Romantic Comedies?

We often find ourselves talking about random movie topics before or after our regular recordings. It was during one of these chats that we started talking about romantic comedies, and how there don't seem to be as many of them anymore. We decided to make a bonus episode where a few of us try to unravel the mystery of this missing genre.

Ant-Man & The Wasp

Another month, another Marvel movie. I know that it feels like we go to the Marvel well too many times, but they keep making movies, so we will keep sharing our opinion. And hey, after 10 years and 20 movies, they finally have a female character in the title! We also take a few minutes to discuss the latest Avengers movie again, since Ryan waited so long to see it.

Skyscraper

Dwayne Johnson used to fight people, but this year we've seen mere people are no longer worthy of his time. A few months ago we watched has he went toe-to-toe-to-claw-to-paw with a bevy of mutated creatures in Rampage, but apparently that was still too little of a challenge. Now Dwayne Johnson is facing off with a 220-story building, that's on fire and full of terrorists. Get your popcorn ready as we discuss the summer action flick, Skyscraper.

Rewind: 1999

1999...what a great year for movies. We could do another episode right now and still forget to mention so many of the great films from that year. Luckily, in this episode, we did remember to talk about Chill Factor, since that is the only movie that really matters. Please let us know what your favorites from this year were.

Enjoy!

Father's Day

Please enjoy as I try to find some sort of catharsis while talking about different movies and moments that remind me of my dad. I thought that it was going to be a lot more difficult to record this episode, but once we started, it really made me happy just talking about all of these stupid moments.  Who brings ham to a movie theater anyway?

Enjoy!

Kill Command & Cargo

This feels like a classic episode right here. Just Ryan and Drew, talking about low budget science fiction and horror. It kind of takes me back to the days when we would screw up the recording on about every other show, and the ones that did work, usually didn't sound that good. Now we're big time,  and have tens of listeners out there who seem to appreciate what we do. At least a couple of them appreciate us. Maybe only one. Thanks, mom!

A Quiet Place

I know that this isn't exactly timely, but sometime a movie comes along where we are all wanting to make sure that we can be a part of the episode. I don't know why this movie lent itself to being such an entertaining episode, but it had me cracking up. Maybe it was Ryan's focused anger on a dry erase board, or Drew's confusion over the printing presses. Whatever the case may be, a good time was has by all.
