Bohemian Rhapsody & Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald

I know I always feel a little down after the holidays, like there just isn’t much to look forward to for awhile, but fear not, because we are still cranking out shows. Maybe you’re going to start working out more in the new year, and you need a podcast to listen to while you sweat away on a treadmill somewhere. We are the perfect show for just such a thing. Anyway, this week we talk about a couple of movies we saw before we went headfirst into Christmas movie, Bohemian Rhapsody and Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. I wish that we had liked both of these movies more than we did, but you know…2018.

Enjoy!

Christmas Classics

I know that it is the day after Christmas, but we just have too much of the holiday spirit in us to give up the ghost just yet. For the last of our Christmas themed episodes, we all tried to watch a “classic” holiday film that we probably should have seen before 2018. I was pleasantly surprised by the lack of bah humbuggery or grinchiness there was, since some of these movies are pretty silly. I guess we can chalk it up to all those Christmas miracles that always seem to be happening.

The Christmas Chronicles

Sometimes Ryan throws a curveball and instead of suggesting a horror film or dark comedy, he pitches the idea to do a show on the Netflix original The Christmas Chronicles. Any film starring Kurt Russel is welcome on COTR, so here is our episode on what has already become an instant classic…somehow.

Hallmark Christmas Movies!

For this episode we each chose a random Hallmark Christmas movie to watch and discuss. I know what you’re thinking… “If you’ve seen one Hallmark movie, haven’t you really seen them all?” Obviously the answer is “yes”, but that doesn’t mean that this won’t become and annual tradition here at Coming Off the Reels. So sit back as we discuss our viewings of North Pole, Christmas in the Smokies, Road to Christmas, and A Shoe Addict’s Christmas.

Enjoy!

A Simple Favor

Sometimes we record so many shows at once that some of them get lost in the mix. This is kind of the case for A Simple Favor. We recored this episode not too terribly long after it was released in theaters but are just getting around to posting it. Fortunately, this movie will be released for streaming and to purchase in the next week or two, so it’s almost like we planned it this way.

Playing Catchup

This week we talk about several movies that we are just getting around to, though our main focus is on Bad Times at the El Royale and Mission Impossible: Fallout. We also circle back on a couple of movies that we’ve talked about on this show already.

Sports!

With lots of folks traveling this holiday season, we thought that maybe you’d like an extra long episode of Coming Off the Reels. So we brought on a couple of special guests to talk about some of our favorite sports movies, and some that are pretty awful. After more than 90 minutes of recording, I think we realized that we may have to record several more episodes on the subject, but this is a start.

Random Questions

This started out as a bonus episode, but went long enough that we decided to put it into the regular rotation. We asked for random suggestions on Twitter, and had a lot of fun discussing them. From tattoos, to the demise of Filmstruck, to annoying habits in movies, we were all over the map on this one. Special thanks to everyone who gave us these ideas!

Halloween (2018)

Should we have posted our episode on the new Halloween movie last Wednesday…on Halloween? Maybe, but I bet there were tons of people making that obvious choice. Instead, we are giving it to you in November, that way Halloween can live on in your hearts well into Thanksgiving.

Enjoy!

Netflix Romantic Comedies

This week we take a look at several of the new Netflix romantic comedies. We did an episode many months ago where we asked what happened to this disappearing category of movies, and apparently we just needed to be patient to find out the answer. While we are thrilled that this genre is still relevant, the results are…a little bit mixed. I would like to go ahead and apologize for how poorly we explain some of these plots, some nights you just can’t find the thread to save your life. So sit back and relax as we fumble our way through Set It Up, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, and Sierra Burgess is a Loser.

Enjoy!

Incredibles 2 & Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

The summer is over, but we refuse to give up the ghost just yet. Instead, we go back and revisit two of the bigger movies from this summer, Incredibles 2 and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. We have…a lot of feelings about both of these titles. We also have a special guest sitting in on this episode, even though he hasn’t seen either of these movies. Our guest, Dan, pitches some great ideas on how to make both of these franchises better, and I can’t say that I disagree with any of his suggestions.

Director Spotlight - Michael Bay

In the last of the three shows we recorded at Two Cities Pizza Company, we did a director spotlight for Michael Bay. We briefly go over his body of work, and talk about the good, bad, and sometimes unwatchable films in his filmography. This isn’t an entire episode bashing everything this director has created. In fact the general feelings toward him seems to be all over the spectrum. So sit back, blow something up, and listen to this week’s episode.

Enjoy!

Two Cities Special - Best of New York & Chicago

This was another show that we recorded at Two Cities Pizza Company. In honor of one of our favorite places to dine, we dedicated the theme of this episode to them by choosing our favorite movies set in these two amazing cities. I know that there are plenty of movies that we don’t mention (sorry Escape from New York), so please feel free to share your favorite movies set in the Big Apple or the Windy City.

Enjoy!

Birthday Special!

To celebrate Drew's 40th birthday, the other fellas kidnapped, and recorded several shows at Two Cities Pizza Company in Mason, OH. Instead of a regular episode, this week you will get the birthday special. Rather than talk about one movie, we talk about Oscar facts, movie lists, and movie trivia. Some of that is related to the birthday celebration, and some of it is just weird information. We had a blast recording this, we hope you have fun listening.

MoviePass!

This was originally going to be just a small bonus episode about MoviePass and the things that we liked and didn't like about the system. Then the wheels started coming off of the much beloved ticketing program, so our conversation became a lot longer. Now we have a full episode all about the good, bad, and ugly sides of MoviePass. Please feel free to send us your stories, because I know there are a lot.

Enjoy!

Won't You Be My Neighbor & Three Identical Strangers

You know folks, we don't just watch crappy action movies where The Rock faces off against a giant building. Sometimes truth is more compelling and certainly stranger than anything we can make up. This week we discuss two recent documentaries,  Won't You Be My Neighbor, the story of Fred Rogers, and Three Identical Strangers, the tale of triplets who were separated at birth and then found each other later in life. With plenty of laughter, tears and suspense in these two films, there's something for everyone.

Enjoy!
