Joker

Joker
Coming Off the Reels

This week we discuss the very divisive film, Joker. Certainly none of us share the same opinion, but we all found things that we enjoyed, and definitely some things that made our blood boil. Whether you liked, loved, or hated this film, I hope you can at least appreciate its ability to spark a conversation. Please let us know how you felt about this one!

Ma

Ma (2019)
Coming Off the Reels

This week we talk about the 2019 film, Ma. That seems so straight forward. The reality of the situation is that we spend half the episode trying to talk about anything else because, spoiler, we weren’t really impressed with this “horror” film. Still, I think we managed to salvage the episode and make something that is at least passably entertaining…unlike the movie, Ma. See what I did there?

200th Episode!

200th Episode!
Coming Off the Reels

Well that really snuck up on us. Hard to believe that we have now recorded 200 of these things. Sure, they aren’t all great, and maybe we had some long gaps in production for awhile, and maybe some of those early episodes were very difficult to listen to, but here we, chugging along. To celebrate this milestone, we decided to compile our “Top 10” lists from 2010-present, roughly the same amount of time we’ve been making this show. We hope that you enjoy this episode, and continue listening as we move along towards 300.

In the Tall Grass

In the Tall Grass
Coming Off the Reels

When I used to work in a video store, I remember that there would be full sections of one particular title, if it was a big enough movie. There was also a row full of single title films, and this is usually where your low budget horror films would end up. Netflix, as a way of replacing video stores, seems to be making both types of movies. I know that you might see that In the Tall Grass is a horror movie based on a Stephen King story, and think that this would have been the kind of movie that gets a whole section at the video store, but I promise you, this is a “single title” film all the way. I hope you like movies that only take place in a field.

It: Chapter 2

It: Chapter 2
Coming Off the Reels

After our last episode, we thought maybe we should go with a more “traditional” horror film. That said, It: Chapter 2 still wants to go toe-to-toe with Midsommar in total runtime…so you know…that’s cool. While this sequel to the smash hit from 2017 may not be as good as its predecessor, there are still plenty of good things to talk about…but damn, it is really long. And how did they do such a great job of casting some people…and really drop the ball with other choices?

The Dead Don't Die & Midsommar
Coming Off the Reels

This week we take a look at two “horror” movies that were released this summer. To be completely honest, I was more than a little surprised at the way people came down on these two films, but I think it makes the show even more entertaining. And maybe, as we talk about the movies, opinions were changed a little. If you’ve seen either of these movies, we would love to hear your opinion!

Yesterday

Yesterday
Coming Off the Reels

This week we discuss the latest film from Danny Boyle, Yesterday. I know that this movie was released to mixed reviews across the board. Some people who love the Beatles felt like it did them a disservice. Some people who don’t like The Beatles just didn’t care for the premise in general. Still others felt the whole thing was a little too schmaltzy. But hey, Ed Sheeran turned out to be pretty funny, and in general, we at COTR like a little schmaltz.

This week we discuss one of the sweetest films of 2019, Peanut Butter Falcon. We won’t keep you in suspense, we loved this movie. If it is still playing near you, grab your friends, walk past the latest franchise film, and support the wonderful redemption of Shia LaBeouf. Or if that doesn’t sound like fun to you, we also talk about Sean being a fan of wrestling. Something for everybody at Coming Off the Reels.

Originally the plan was just to do an episode on Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, but we decided to go full QT on this one and give you a much more bloated episode. We go through all his Tarantino’s movies and talk about the good, the bad, and the feet…my god he loves feet. So buckle in for this extra special, extra long episode of Coming Off the Reels.

Good Boys...kind of
Coming Off the Reels

So I promise that we set out to record an episode on the the recent comedy, Good Boys, but we got sidetracked a little. So now in this Good Boys episode you will also hear us talk about 47 Meters Down: Uncaged, The Art of Racing in the Rain, the trailers for the new Star Wars film and Last Christmas, and we also try to figure out why Booksmart didn’t make more money. So I apologize if we are all over the map on this one, but that’s kind of the premise of the show.

Coming Off the Reels

This week we take a look a two recent horror films, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark and Ready or Not. Did these well reviewed movies meet our expectations, or end up leaving us feeling a little bit cold? As per usually Sean will get hung up on the weirdest little things, and Drew will argue with Sean about getting hung up on the weirdest little things.

The Boys

The Boys
Coming Off the Reels

Look at us, really branching out and trying new things. Instead of just reviewing what feels like an endless amount of superhero movies, we’ve decided to review a television show…about superheroes. That’s as much change as I can handle all at once, so please be patient. This week we take a look at Amazon’s bleak take on Justice League/The Avengers with their original series, The Boys. Does it amount to more than just the gimmick of flipping the script on many beloved characters? Guess you’ll just have to listen to find out.

Okay, out of the gate, we have some problems with the title. We understand why they felt the need to make it so wordy, but you know Roy, and he really get particular when it comes to movie titles. How did we feel about the 9th movie in the F&F universe? I guess we could just tell you, but then maybe you would listen to us ramble on for an hour about how ridiculous this movie was. So maybe just listen to the episode.

Coming Soon
Coming Off the Reels

This week we are taking a look at several of the movies still slated for this year. We hope they are all wonderful, but that seems pretty unlikely. Which movies are you looking forward to this year? Let us know if we need to dedicate a whole episode to any of the following films.

The Lion King (2019)

The Lion King
Coming Off the Reels

Here we are again, in the endless circle of Disney films. This time we are visiting the latest “live action” remake of a classic Disney cartoon, The Lion King. Much like the other examples of Disney reimagining their films, this one was met with pretty divisive reviews. Much like the Aladdin remake, The Lion King seems to be resistant to any negative comments that reviewers may have. How do you think we landed on this one? Guess you’ll just have to listen to find out…because this is a podcast…that’s kind of how this works.

Ranking Spider-Man

Spider-Man movies ranked
Coming Off the Reels

This week we rank all the Spider-Man…Spider-Men…Spider-Folks? Well I am not really sure of the plural just yet, but we look at all films with spider bitten heroes and rank them from worst to best. We also rank the actors who have taken on the role. I know that people will disagree with us, because I have already had people tell me they disagree with us, and the show isn’t even up yet. That’s okay, we don’t all have to be on the same page on this one. The debate is what’s fun about this kind of thing.

Spider-Man: Far From Home

Spider-Man: Far From Home

As long as there are comic book movies, we will continue to do episodes about them. Would it be nice to talk about other movies? Of course, but we give the fans what they want, and what they want is to hear us talk about the new Spider-Man…I guess…who really knows. What did you think of the newest feature starring the famed web-crawler?

When Roy has a couple of days off, and spends that time watching movies starring JGL, we do a special episode all about him. It turns out that we like pretty much everything that he has done, even the ones that maybe weren’t as well received as they could have been. Do you have a favorite JGL movie or moment? Please let us know!

Yeah, that’s right, we are pairing the new Netflix comedy Always Be My Maybe and the ultra-violent Superman knockoff, Brightburn. Do they go together at all? No. Did we find a way to make bridge the difference to make a good pairing? No. But did we at least give it all we had in the hopes that you would enjoy this weird duo? Also no. Kidding, kidding…we always give you 110%.

This week we look at two bio pics, one focusing on Elton John, the other Paige, the WWE wrestler. How can we possibly pair these two film? Well…both are based on British stars…and both Elton John and Paige have incorporated a lot of theatrics into their performances…and…look…we’ve done like 200 of these shows now, and sometimes you just talk about two movies to make the episode longer, and forgo a natural segue. Everyone just be cool and accept this.
